Mental Health & Other Priority Diseases

In Uganda, mental health illnesses and other priority diseases like HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and chronic illnesses remain under-addressed. Stigma, limited resources, and lack of trained professionals leave many—especially children, youth, and caregivers—without the help they need.

Core Interventions:

  • Mental Health Screening and Early Support:
Provide regular mental health assessments and early intervention services at community and facility levels.
  • Psychosocial Counseling and Therapy:
Offer individual, group, and family counseling to address trauma, stress, and emotional challenges.
  • Managing Mental Health Triggers:
    • Deliver psychoeducation sessions on recognizing and coping with common mental health triggers (e.g., chronic illnesses, trauma, loss, substance use, financial stress).
    • Facilitate stress and anxiety management programs using techniques like mindfulness, breathing exercises, and relaxation methods.
    • Run peer support groups for individuals with lived experience of mental illness.
    • Provide safe spaces for emotional support, reflection, and crisis de-escalation.
  • Substance Use Prevention and Support:
Conduct awareness campaigns and provide counseling and referral for individuals affected by substance abuse, a common trigger for mental illness.
  • Community Awareness and Anti-Stigma Campaigns:
Promote open conversations about mental health to reduce stigma and encourage help-seeking behavior.
  • Capacity Building for Frontline Workers and Caregivers:
Train community health workers, teachers, and family caregivers in basic mental health support and trigger recognition.
  • Organize community medical general health outreaches offering basic health check-ups (blood pressure, malaria, nutrition, HIV/TB testing, etc.).
  • Train community health workers and caregivers on integrated mental and general health care.
  • Conduct awareness campaigns on mental health, hygiene, reproductive health, and nutrition.
  • Establish safe spaces and peer support groups for youth, women, and vulnerable populations.
